One other Quick Thing I Forgot

My mom has shaved her eyebrows off.  She claims it was an accident, but she’s blind!  Of course a woman whose eye sight is so bad that she has to get shots in her eyeballs to keep them from deteriorating any further is at high risk for having some kind of seeing related accident.  It’s so obvious that a woman who wears contacts and glasses and still has to put things right up by her face to read them is a good candidate for an accident of this sort that it starts to not seem like an accident at all.

I have my eye on her and the second she starts singing “I am just a poor boy, stranger in this town,” I’m getting her straight into rehab or therapy.  Lord knows we don’t need any misguided white supremacists citing her as their inspiration.

  1. How can that be an accident? Shaving a little bit of one off, maybe. Over-plucking to the point of basically losing them, maybe. But how can you shave two whole eyebrows off accidentally? How closely does she need to get a razor to her face to know what it is?

  2. My point exactly! I should call her and tell her that my readers demand an explanation and ask if she cares to comment on the record, but she has really bony elbows and I don’t want her to poke me with them.

  3. Well, it may have been an accident that started it. She shaved off half of one by accident, and then just decided her best bet was to shave the both off completely and let them grow back in evenly.

  4. True story: A woman in my hometown that shaved her eyebrows off years ago — for what purpose, I have no idea. They never grew back for some reason. Anyway, she must have some stencil that uses when she paints them on. They’re always perfect but they look freaky nonetheless.

A friend had gone over there to pick her son up for a senior trip or something and said “yeah, I was over there SO early, Janine didn’t have her eyebrows painted on yet”

  5. This must have been some accident. Funny thing about eyebrows – you can do the wig thing when you’re bald – eyebrows missing will cause people to gawk a little. Hope she’s good with a pencil.

  6. Shaving off your eyebrows and penciling them in was considered very chic in the 30s and 40s. Think Jean Harlow or Bette Davis. However, Liz Taylor’s bushy brows put that look out of business.

  7. bridgett, I was thinking of that – my grandmother shaved off and penciled in her eyebrows for years. I don’t really see how it could be an accident, though…

  8. Well, did she say it was a shaving accident? Maybe she was trying to wax them. I can see accidentally taking off the whole eyebrow a lot more easily that way.

  9. Yes, she said it was a shaving accident. She was trying to “trim” them.

  10. I thought that 13 was the age for the catastrophic eyebrow accident. Maybe she’s trying to rediscover her youth?
