I have the coolest thing to do this afternoon, which is work-related, which is fairly off-topic here. But I am excited. Lunch with nm, exciting work thing, some friends this evening. Parents arrive. Yes, they are back. And I am going to Georgia with them, which is a long, stupid story, but the short, non-fucked [...]

God damn it, you cannot tell an illegal immigrant by looking at him. “I’ve been on the site and I’ve seen people I suspect are illegal and I’ve been told by some people working on the site they have illegals there,” Turner said. Of all of the reasons to be sitting on that construction site [...]

We are screwed. No matter who wins, we are screwed. I’m glad I had already decided that I couldn’t, in good conscience, vote for McWherter, because otherwise, tonight would have been heartbreaking. He actually said he doesn’t believe mosques should be allowed to go into neighborhoods. One wonders what other sorts of religious buildings shouldn’t [...]

Here’s one for a park I didn’t go to.

I have lots of thoughts on crap, but I’ve reached the point in the summer where I’m just not that excited about being political. Which sucks for Pith! Ha, no, I promise, I will come up with something to write over there other than park reviews. Here’s what I want to tell you. Yesterday, I [...]

The Butcher and I are watching True Blood together for the first time ever, even though we both watch it. I wonder how soon until he gets annoyed by my typing. Why is there any sexual tension between Sookie and the werewolf dude? “Shut the fuck up.” Poor Bill. I think the Mississippi vampires have [...]

So, it seems like it might be okay at breakfast. But they also found the food pretty bland at other times. Okay, then, we’ll try it for breakfast.

I just got back the first set of pages from the typesetter. This means I now have to go through and try to catch all of my own errors that I’ve missed upon reading the fifty-eight million times before and any errors that might have been introduced in the typesetting process. But… This was my [...]

Clearly, these are not naked people growing out of flowers, but gardeners during the Medieval Warm Period who have done the only sensible thing and taken to gardening wearing only very light flower shaped skirts. Um… And then their legs were bitten off by dragons. Very sad. Really, it’s a shame how many medieval scholars [...]

Remember this? The archaeologists are documenting evidence of looting in that spot.

I sent my manuscript to the typesetter. I am a little nervous, which is weird, since y’all have read and will read most of the contents of the book (I got rid of a story from last year that I didn’t like and wrote a new one). In regular publishing, a lot of stuff happens [...]

This is, perhaps, the most generous reading of that bullshit press release there could possibly be. I also know this is the reading the McWherter camp is floating when regular folks who are outraged ask them about it. And I love Steve Ross, but that’s not what the press release said–the press release said, “I [...]

Look here! I wrote about my trip to Bells Bend.

Twice yesterday I got caught in a deluge–once down by Vandy and once in Bells Bend. We got no rain at the house all day yesterday. We haven’t had rain in three weeks, I’d guess, except for a very light shower on Saturday. We really, really need a good soaking rain. No flooding, though, please!

For some reason, it stands out more with the sound off, but, yeah, take a look. I know, I know. This isn’t racism. It’s just a giant coincidence that all of the “good” folks are white and all of the “bad” folks aren’t.

I have had some great behind the scenes suggestions for improving my back jacket copy. I’ve decided to share it with y’all because I know this is the kind of nerdy stuff that interests me and I reckon it might interest some of you. Here’s my copy. No one knows for sure why Nashville has [...]

I am kind of given over to despair about our ability to do anything with the information we have, lately, but please, go read this about the flood and ask yourself–why are people being let rebuild in places the city knows are going to flood? In my opinion, this is the most important piece of [...]

Here’s the main problem with throwing in with Arizona for a Democrat (aside from the humanitarian aspects; let’s just talk strategy for a second): a good portion of your constituency is black. If you can keep on the “we need the jobs here to go to Americans” side of the fence, you can appeal to [...]

You know, I could write jacket copy all day for anyone but me. Writing my own, which I want to be tempting and engaging and enticing, which I guess, is the same as tempting, has been incredibly anxiety-producing. Like squeezing out a turd when you’re constipated. I have an idea of where I want to [...]

At dinner tonight, I was telling the Butcher about the whole McWherter stands with Arizona thing and he said, “So, I guess that’s just a race I don’t vote in.” I’m also thinking it’s time we just accept that no one has any idea how to bring jobs to Tennessee. That’s why they’re talking about [...]

Well. Wow. That’s interesting. It brings up some questions, though. So, Mike, what other parts of the Constitution do you have issue with? Should gun lovers also be worried? Or is it just Section 8 of Article One? If we don’t recognize the constitutional authority of the federal government to make rules regarding immigration and [...]
