He emailed me yesterday and he sounded down and homesick. I think he felt trapped in the touristy areas and not able to get out and see as much of St. Maartin’s as he’d like. I guess it would suck to take your first trip to a foreign country only to find you were surrounded by people just like you. He should go on a trip with the Professor. I hear about her stories and it’s all “yes, we did this cheesy tourist thing, but then we ended up at this cool place and that lead to this other adventure.” That sounds more like the Butcher’s style.
Still, I have missed him. And the lawn needs cutting.
He needs to go to the beach near the airport before he leaves to the planes can practically land on his head. google it.
I would love to travel with the Butcher. Him and my brother together – wow – we could charge tickets for people to watch and listen.
yep. Islands especially are places where it’s difficult to leave the compound (as my brother calls it). Things have developed that way because lots of people only think they like to travel but then don’t like the unknowns or the differences. Oh and because they need to be made to feel safe by becoming like prisoners themselves, just in a resort of a jail with expensive drinks. Luckily all my time in the Caribbean has been professional time with some natives.
But I generally just like to travel. So I do a bunch of touristy things – seen countless houses of worship. But I also read a bit, study some maps, and then go get lost wherever I am.
