Long Day, With Tick

I woke up to discover that I had no antivirus protection. And then I couldn’t get my firewall to work. And on and on. Fixing it took all day and even Microsoft trying to convince me to spend $100 to fix the problem. But basically, the resolution came from resetting crap back to June.

Which I wish I had figured out back around lunch.

And then I found a tick stuck to my scalp.

So, it was that kind of day.

  1. Curious to know if you have any sort of backup solution like Mozy or even a sync solution like Dropbox?

I personally don’t spend a lot of time trying to figure out problems like the one you’ve described. Once your system is compromised, it’s usually easiest to just restore to the factory image and restore/resync.

  2. Yeah, my problem is that I don’t know enough about computers to realize that this was the way to go. Like, I know, if something isn’t working you check the power, restart, and reinstall and see if that clears it up.

But after that–or in this case when Microsoft doesn’t let you reinstall the firewall–I was really lost. I looked on their forums and it’s all “you have to find an uncompromised registry key and install that instead” or “restart your CTE thingy and check the permissions on blah blah blah” and I was like “WTF?!”

Honestly, I didn’t even know that restoring to an older point wouldn’t erase my files. I emailed everything I thought i couldn’t live without to myself (I have an external hard drive I back up to, but didn’t know if it was compromised some how) and restored back to June and was like “Holy shit, that was so easy. Why didn’t a single thing I read recommend doing that to start with?” And then all my files were still here!

So, that’s good to know. In the future, I will just do that to start with.
