Just Lovely

I took a brief detour through the lovely city of Inglewood on my way to the hotel, but managed to remember that I need to stay this side of the 110 if I don’t want to also take a lovely tour of South Central.

Needless to say, after realizing what a lovely part of town I’m staying it, I decided to treat myself to a slightly larger car and valet parking.

Yes, Sarcastro, I am being a tad petulant.

On the other hand, right where I am is very beautiful and I am actually excited to get to explore some this week.

I’m a little frazzled from all the flying.  Both planes were packed and I had to break down and buy a book in Dallas because I got through everything I’d brought to read on the plane.

I picked up The Prestige, which is really good so far, if a little too conflicted about whether it’s a book about a trick or a character study.  Coble, I think you’d like it, if you haven’t read it.  It’s like Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell but with less whimsy and more Nikoli Tesla.

Okay, I must go find something to eat and unpack.

  1. Nearby Hawthorne, CA is the home of the Beach Boys. Or was the home, more accurately. That neighborhood is a long way from 1959.You are near the Hollywood Park Race Track. Do yourself a favor and go play the ponies while you are out there.I’m looking forward to seeing The Prestige. So don’t ruin it. I meant to give you that Sheherazade deal I just finished. Going through the home library, I have the Richard F. Burton translation as well.Long Beach, Represent!

  2. I drove by the race track on my way here.I can’t wait to see The Prestige, either, just to see what’s the same and how they’ve modified it.Well, you can give it to me when you get back. I have *A Shot in the Dark* for you.

  3. Holy crap. I read Jonathan strange just to see how it ended. It was a crapfest. At least in those Sleeping Beauty books shit happens to help you past the boring stuff.I a simple man. I need simple stories.

  12. I have never been to California. I have an irrational fear of going there–I’m sure that it will slide into the ocean on my visit. And Disney World is better than Disney Land, so I’m boycotting the whole state. And here’s the part where I look like a total idiot, because I didn’t realise _The Prestige_ was also a book. I have a feeling I know where I’m going tonight…I just finished the Fall HP Readthrough and need something else for good reading. BTW, Susannah Clarke has a new book of short stores out called _The Ladies Of Grace Adieu_ which is supposed to have the same richness of _StrangeNorrell_ without the density.Sorry to disagree with you SF, but _Strange_ is easily the best book I’ve read in the last decade.

  13. One of my three apartment co-dwellers when I lived in Boston was from LA and drove a city school bus route in South Central. He said it wasn’t so bad if you didn’t mind all the gangbangers hanging out at the bus stops attempting to recruit elementary school students and stuff like that… but that was a long time ago. I’m sure it’s much better now.
