Where’s Dan Savage When I Need Him?

Dear Internet,

Something is weighing somewhat heavy on my heart and it’s not something I can talk about specifically in public. But here’s what I ask you, dear internet, do you ever find yourself thinking that life requires a level of sophistication and maturity that you just can’t muster?

  1. And I listen to Dan Savage as often as possible. Please call him with a question so that I can hear you on his show and grin that I know the girl who’s on his show.

    ;)

  2. …do you ever find yourself thinking that life requires a level of sophistication and maturity that you just can’t muster?

Every gadam day, B. I’m over 40 and still think of myself as in my 20s, as though 40 is just impossible to imagine. I still think (after all my schooling and all the evidence to the contrary) that all my work is the result of “getting away with something” that I have no business doing.

I can make it look like I’ve got it all down and got it all together, but like Dylan said, I break just like a little girl.

    You aren’t alone out there.

  3. Life doesn’t require it. Life is certainly better, or more accurately, more fun when you have experience and maturity. I know nothing of Dan Savage.

I think sometimes people confuse terms like sophistication and maturity with intelligence, and thats a mistake. I am a bit troubled by what I see as too many thinking that simply claiming the moral high ground is evidence of being wise. Likewise, I see too many that rely on manipulative techniques to achieve some goal, either in their love life or with their friends.

I have been reading you for a long time, and I would tell anyone that asked me that you are on of the most mature people I know. Sophistication isn’t something I feel qualified to speak about, as I am clearly not sophistiscated.

  4. Sometimes I think we are all just playing at being adults because that’s what we’re “supposed to do.” Maturity–I think–sometimes comes with learning from are many and varied mistakes on how not to handle adverse situations. e.g., “I’ll remember never to do that again!”

  5. I think I have some sophistication, because I am able to smile and say hello to a female stranger without her thinking I’m trying to get into her pants. But I think I lack maturity, because behind the harmless smile I’m still checking out her tits and ass.
