Jesus Wept.

The following makes me so angry I am out of words for it.  When a judge can look at a woman standing before him trying to get an order of protection against her husband and tell her to “go back to Nicaragua,” even though she’s here legally, even though her children are U.S. citizens (His response to that? “The judge said there were Americans here in this country who could take care of my children.), well, fuck me, America, I just don’t know what to say.

Sean Braisted is more articulate than me.

  1. eh, it’s not that big a surprise. expatriates never have what amounts to real rights, no matter what country they’re living in, unless possibly they’re rich enough to buy ’em. some countries claim to work differently, but all countries are made up of people, and people just don’t seem to like them darn furriners; it’s one of those instinct-level things most folks can’t help.

you want the right to claim protection under the law, you get citizenship, or go live where you already have such. that’s just the way this world works, always have. and us expats know it, or we damn well should at any rate.

  2. Doesn’t make it right.

I have rewritten the Pledge so that you all who work with immigrants may redistribute it to them so that they don’t feel false promised have been made:

I pledge allegiance to the flag
Of the United States of America
And to the Republic for which it stands
    One Nation
    Under God
    Indivisible, With Liberty and Justice
For those lucky enough to be born here who can afford to buy it.

  3. Is there anything in the way that the laws about restraining orders are written that suggests that they only be granted at the request of a citizen? Not that I think they ought to be written that way, but I’m trying to understand in what way that judge thought that that woman’s citizenship status had the least relevance. Why did it even enter his head?

  4. I have no idea. Mack reminded me that Maryville, where this is all taking place, is the place where a Mexican restaurant was grafittied with swastikas a little back, too. So, I think brown/white tensions must be running high in the community, just in general.

I just feel so angry and helpless in the face of this.
