Am I The Only One Who Finds ‘We Will Not Tolerate Intolerance’ to Be Less than Comforting?

Thanks to Newscoma and Fried Apple Pie, we get word of a gay-bashing.

Damn.

You know, here we are fighting for gay marriage when two guys can’t even walk into Quiznos on a college campus in this town in safety.  Seriously, maybe we need to focus on just the remedial human rights.  I don’t know.

I was talking to the Professor this weekend about how part of the problem with seeking social justice is that, many times, there’s no one sympathetic to your goals in a high enough position to see all the fires.  No one in a position to notice that they’re not just isolated unfortunate incidents, but part of a larger pattern.

I don’t know how one gets that kind of perspective, but there are places in town where it is sorely needed.

Don’t let the most violent of bigots convince you to debase your goals; that would be a victory for them. Besides, all of us being treated equally by this government by/for/of the people *is* a basic human right.

It might be that winning gay marriage is the most important thing that we could do to prevent future hate crimes against homosexuals. We have practically eliminated De Jure racial discrimination* in America, but De Facto discrimination is more stubborn. But I think that the De Facto discrimination is less now than 20 years ago, and the trend is in the right direction. The law can lead the way, and the people will probably follow.

    * I mean only discrimination written into laws, not that the police and courts are colorblind.

  2. They assaulted them, and they’re being charged with assault. Assuming the case isn’t thrown out by a gay-hating judge, what more do you think should be done?

Or are you just posting that you wish stuff like that didn’t happen?

  4. Holy shit, Exador, you may at last understand me. (It was the three on one fist-fight/smooching fantasy that did it, wasn’t it? Suddenly you have great insight into my mind.)

Yes, I am indeed saying that I wish stuff like this didn’t happen, that I wish we could move on to talking about how to get people partner rights without having to still bring young jackasses up to speed about the fact that you don’t get to wait around and jump folks who are icky to you, even if Tucker Carlson says it’s okay.

I don’t know. It makes me happy that you might indeed finally get that I am not always transmitting secret marching orders to all the “womyn” who read me so that we all are coordinated in our efforts to make men miserable.

The folks at The View already have that covered.

    Ha.

  5. Hey, this just covers the gays, with whom my record is clear.

No, you’re still on the hook for the anti-patriarchy-we-are-womyn-hear-us-roar stuff.

This is one of the things that always gets me in these kinds of conversations. How much time do we spend on trying to point out that ‘damn, I wish this wouldn’t happen’ and ‘we need X, Y, and Z specific measures to deal with the consequences of this’ are really different conversations?

I deal with it by making everything longer and way more complicated than is probably advisable for the medium… but it feels like that should be something we should be able to dispense with. Perhaps a standard disclaimer or something?
