That’s a tomato hornworm. It will eat the shit out of your tomatoes. I would do a lot more than poke at him if he were in my garden, but that’s the kind of nasty simian I am.
Will he become something? A moth or something?
It will turn into Mothra. It’s a gray-brown heavy moth about 4-5 inches in wing width. You might know it as a sphinx or hummingbird moth. The moths are good for scaring you and making more tomato hornworms, which in turn are good for eating your tomato plants. I’m not even sure that owls will eat sphinx moths.
