The Scream of the Carrot

I’m almost sure we learned that carrots scream when I was in middle school. I don’t remember how they were supposed to scream, lacking screaming things like mouths and vocal chords, but I thought of the screaming carrots again when I read Natalie Angier’s piece about how we’re learning more and more about plants’ striving for life.

  1. I have heard something about most plants emitting some type of chemical when they are injured. This can be equated to “screaming in pain” I guess. I think it is mostly just to get vegetarians off our backs :p.

  2. My first instinct is to ask you if perhaps you’re thinking of the song “Carrot Juice is Murder” by the Arrogant Worms.

But I’m not sure if the ages of the song and yourself are such that you could have experienced it in elementary school or not.
