Others Decide to Self-Publish

Yesterday, I had to explain to someone what an advance actually was. I know people think it’s a lump sum of money publishers give authors for the right to publish their books, after which authors get years of royalties.

But no, it is an advance against your royalties. What they pay you up front you have to earn out before they pay you any thing else.

I could almost feel the air go out of the room.

Anyway, Ray Connolly talks about his decision to self-publish.
