Blows My Mind

I’m going to bet that at least some of you already know about this song, “Cypress Grove” by Clutch, but I did not learn of it until it was mentioned over at Nine Bullets, where I learn about all good music from a guy who likes Lucero, which is just a band I cannot get into. So, it’s kind of weird that there’s this blog that turns me onto all kinds of awesome music that just blows my mind and yet Lucero… I don’t know. Taste is a weird thing. I may have none of it.

But this is not a post for wondering how it is possible that Lucero has fans with such good musical taste. This is where I ask you to listen to this song (loudly, if you can), really listen to the lyrics, and then answer my question.

Okay, so here’s my question: Other than Memphis Minnie’s “Hoodoo Lady Blues,” can you think of another song in which the subject of the song is a woman (or women) who are not engaged in anything sexual and who are portrayed as bad-ass and a little scary? I think there must be some, but I just can’t think of them. And I keep listening to “Cypress Grove” half-expecting some “and that’s my woman” sentiment, but no, there’s just a scary woman who will shoot the shit out of you if she catches you trespassing.

I love it.

  1. There’s “The Wife of Usher’s Well,” but I don’t think that’s the sort of song you had in mind.

  2. “The Curse of Millhaven” by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds is about a murderous little girl, told from her POV. I think what I like best about this Clutch song (love Clutch) is that it’s about a group of women whose allegiance is a mystery to outsiders. I like that mystery.

  3. Yes, Lauren, that’s exactly it! I didn’t really put my finger on it, but it’s more than just that they’re not sexualized; it is that there’s a mystery to them. Not the typical “oh, women are so mysterious and unknowable” crap, but an actual mystery.

Just what a fucking awesome song.
