Ruining the Environment, One Air Conditioned Day at a Time

I’m going to admit to you that, when I realized last night that it was cooler outside than it was in the house, that I opened all the windows and turned the air conditioning on. And then I slept and slept and slept.

It was wonderful.

I’ve wasted my whole weekend doing glorious amounts of nothing. I plan on wasting today doing the same, after I have a shower. Which I really need to get around to doing.

  1. My great aunt cools her house down at night by waiting until it’s cooler outside than inside* and then turning on a fan in a window at one end of the house (facing outward) and opening a window at the other end of the house. That pulls cool air in and lowers the temperature in the whole house. She learned this from my great grandfather who learned it while working in a mine company machine shop in West Virginia.

    It really does work.

*If you want to be nerdy and stalk the temperature, an indoor/outdoor thermometer is necessary of course.

Umm … why? Is this for allergies or something? Sorry if I’m sounding obtuse here.

We open up our windows and porches in the morning when it’s really cool, then close everything up during the day, including the blinds. Keeps the house cool because we invested in insulation and sealing everything off around the windows. At night we open up the windows and let the cool air in. Next day I seal everything up again. This works really well and fortunately I haven’t had to turn our A/C on yet. I can usually hold off doing that until June when the humidity hits, though this year has been so warm so fast, I really doubt I’ll be that lucky.
