  1. That bricklaying pattern is called “Flemish Bond”. It was expensive to use, because it uses more bricks, in order to have the ends exposed like that. It was also really strong, because, like you see, it makes for a thick wall. Contrast with “English Bond”, that looks a lot flimsier (at least to me).
